Meta tags help your web pages in search engine ranking. These tags give an identity to your web page about its category. Meta tags are the main aspect of on page search engine optimization. Without these tags you can’t expect good search engine result. Those who has tried to add meta tags like meta keywords and descriptions to blogger pages, might have noticed that to add meta keywords and description to blogger pages is not an easy task to do. You will have to edit your blogger templates coding in order to add meta tags to each post and pages of your blogspot blog. In this post i’m going to describe you how you can add meta keywords and description to each of your blogger page and post.

Problems You Normally Face In Blogger (Blogspot) : If you add a constant meta tag to your blogger template then the keywords and description will be same for all of your blogger page and post and yet Google will consider it as a spammy post/page.

So Here are the changes you have to apply in your template’s coding in order to add meta keywords and description to each post of your blog.

1. Login to your blogger’s account, Open the Layout panel and go to Edit HTML.

2. Click the Download Full Template link and save a backup copy of your current template so that you can undo the changes you made in case anything goes wrong.

3. Locate the following lines of code:

1
2
3
4
5
<head>
<b:include data="blog" name="all-head-content" />
<title><data:blog.pageTitle /></title>

4. Add the following code immediately after the <b:include data=”blog” name=”all-head-content” /> line:

1
2
3
4
5
6
7
<b:if cond='data:blog.url == "http://Your_Address.blogspot.com/"'>
<meta content='DESCRIPTION' name='description'/>
<meta content='KEYWORDS' name='keywords'/>
</b:if>

5. Replace the http://Your_Address.blogspot.com/ line with the URL of your blog’s homepage.

6. Replace the word DESCRIPTION with a description for your homepage.

7. Replace the word KEYWORDS with a list of keywords separated by commas and relevant for your homepage.

8. Now, for each individual page of your blog you’ll need to follow steps 4-7 again, but adding corresponding URL’s, descriptions and keywords. For example, if your first article is about technology, what you’ll need to do next is…

9. Add this code again immediately after the <b:include data=”blog” name=”all-head-content” /> line:

1
2
3
4
5
6
7
<b:if cond='data:blog.url == "http://Your_Address.blogspot.com/"'>
<meta content='DESCRIPTION' name='description'/>
<meta content='KEYWORDS' name='keywords'/>
</b:if>

10. Replace the http://Your_Address.blogspot.com/ line with http://Your_Address.blogspot.com/2008/03/my_tech_post.html

11. Replace the word DESCRIPTION with a description of technology article.

12. Replace the word KEYWORDS with technology article’s keywords.

You have done now, save the template and check if it’s working what it’s supposed to. Still If you are facing problem, please ask your question by commenting here. I’ll be glad to assist you.

WARNING : Create a backup copy of your current template before doing this.
